Assignment #2: The Pledge

I pledge to be on the internet for the maximum of 2 hour
I pledge to put my work before the internet
I pledge to not forget to eat when I am browsing the web
I pledge to make sure I spend more time outside and doing physical things than being on the computer
I pledge to stop using the internet at 10 so I can have healthy sleeping habit

Journal #4: Netiquette

What I found most surprising when it comes to issues around Netiquette is that so many people can be rude without even realizing they are doing it. A lot more people seem to be getting insulted online and I think that may be because people don't realize that they are being insulting just because they're in all caps or doing something foolish. I don't think most people concern themselves with the terms of service/use agreements when joining a site because they don't think that there could be anything to concern them. People think that there aren't any secrets on websites so they think they can trust them but they don't realize all the possible secrets they may have. People should start reading them because they may not actually agree with all the conditions and then rethink it before they make their decision. I think I have pretty good online behavior. I never read the terms and conditions but I make sure to stay on safe sites so I don't risk getting any viruses. On a scale of one to ten, I think I would be an eight. Something I can take from this unit and use is to make sure I am extra polite online so people don't think I have something against them or am being rude. What I think is the biggest issue when it comes to young people and netiquette is cyber bullying. Over the past few years, cyber bullying has become a major issue and it not something that is easy to just stop. I think over the next few years, it will only get worse unless there is a big change. 

Online Discussion Boards (Assignment #3)

1. A lot of these are similar to face to face conversations because talking on the internet is the same as talking in person. In person, we don't want to sound rude when we're talking to people so we talk politely and the same goes for talking on the internet because you're still talking to someone on the other end.
2.Four guidelines that I feel are very important when interacting with other people online are;

• Not using capital letters all the time because it can seem as if you are yelling at them and it may hurt their feelings
• Always remember to say please and thank you because if you don't, they may think it's rude and think you have something against them
• If you tell someone their stupid in person or on the internet, the other person will always take offence to it because it'll be taken personally
• Always be forgiving because it doesn't feel nice to be hated or to have something against someone else so its nice to just move on and forgive the person for whatever they did wrong

3. I have never made a comment on a discussion board
4. I think I would enjoy a course where you would discuss issues online with other people because I like talking and voicing my opinion.

Do As I Say (Assignment #2)

Five reasons that will keep me on the path to creating a wonderful online world are;
1. I don't want to go to jail, so I wont hack
2. I want to be happy, so I'll only go on happy websites
3. I don't want to get viruses, so I'll stay on safe websites
4. I won't illegally get songs because the people deserve to get payed
5. I want to earn my own money so i will not steal anybody's identities

Assignment #1: Online Standards of Service Use

1. Five websites that use the terms and services agreements or have major conditions before using are; Microsoft Word, iTunes, Email, Expedia.ca, and Snapchat.
2. Five things you should be aware of when not reading Terms of Service and Agreements are; If they host your photo they also own it, you don't own what you bought, they can turn your phone into an expensive brick, iTunes knows who you are and what you're doing, and you're almost always giving up your right to sue. www.cracked.com

Journal #3: Digital Rights and Responsibilities

What I found most surprising when it comes to digital rights and responsibilities is that there are a lot of rules and only a few people actually follow them. I think that when people are on line, they aren't really aware of how dangerous it is so they do not act as responsible as they should. I think the most important commandment I made was thou shalt not hack because you could go to jail for that or get into a lot of trouble. The biggest issue with digital rights and responsibilities with young people is cyber bullying. I think this is the biggest issue because a lot of people are getting bullied online without other people knowing so it could get a lot worse than what normal bullying could get and lead to traumatic events.
