Reflections on Digital Life

Facebook Follies:

On Monday we watched a documentary about Facebook Follies. People should be more careful what they put on Facebook because you might post something that you'd regret in the future. A lot of people don't think before they put something on Facebook or the Internet which they should because it could hurt the way people think about him/her or effect on what their future job will be. Facebook is a great place for competitors to observe their opponents and find something to use against you. If you think about it, Facebook is a business and we are the product they're selling. Facebook can sell our personal information so think before you post.

Digital Life Quiz:

My reaction to the quiz is that it surprised me with the answers. I didn't think 500 000 people had Facebook in April 2011, imagine how much there is now. I also thought that the amount of people making games, stories, videos and artwork was really high because I thought most people just browsed through the Internet instead of creating things on it. These answers to the questions don't really reflect on how I use digital media because I only got 5 out of 14 questions right. I think the digital media I use the most is either Snap Chat or Instagram. I think I use these digital medias the most because of the pictures instead of having to read something. It feels like those sites are less formal than other sites so that's why I use Snap Chat and Instagram more than Facebook.

The Digital World

An up for me living in the digital world is that I can stay in contact with friends and family that doesn't live near me. Also it's an advantage when you miss a TV show and you want to catch up on it later. Some down falls about being connected to the digital world is that all your information is open for anyone to view. It's also bad when you post something in your early teens and now regret it but it will always be there. Living in a digital world affects our relationships with others by not socializing outside of the world on your device and you would never say the same thing in person as what you would say online which would cause bigger problems than what you already had with the person. A down side for society being connected to the digital world is that a whole new way of bullying was found after people started to use the digital world (cyber bullying). It's easier to say something rude online than in person because you actually feel bad in person but online it's just like you're not talking to anyone.

Digital Dummies

  • There is about 32,000,000 people who use/has a blackberry in 2007
  • I liked the quote they said; "are we in charge of our cellphones or are they in charge of us?''
  • One of the facts they said was interesting was that stress can shrink your brain and cause memory loss
  • Almost every person has some type of technology
  • The attention span of a person now is the same as a gold fish
  • I think that as generations pass, it will become almost impossible to do things without the help of technology and we will be helpless without them.
Inside The Dark Web

  • Emails aren't just being read by us but by computers
  • Someone is always watching what you search on the web and they can sell it to other company's that want your information
  • If your wifi is on while you're walking in a public place, people can track you
  • What you are reveling can give people huge power
  • The White House was scared of being watched online so they had to develop a company to watch the web to make sure there was no one invading their privacy
Technology Presentation

  • The social media experiment was interesting to watch and see the reactions of the people that have open Instagram profiles for everyone to view
  • Some of the things you do on your phone can be illegal
  • You have a digital footprint made up of every thing you viewed on the internet
  • Liking a mean post on Facebook can get you charged
  • I liked the definition of T.H.I.N.K
T- is it true
H- is it harmful
I- is it illegal
N- is it necessary
K- is it kind

Privacy On The Internet

My thoughts on this graphic novel was that is was a good message to give on how important it is to have privacy settings on everything that you have personal information on. During the discussion on this graphic novel, we discussed how neither of us have privacy settings for our profiles. If I was to leave my phone on the bus, whoever picked it up would find out all of my personal information. I probably should put a privacy setting on anything that needs it.

Everyday Privacy

Something in this article that confirmed what I already knew was that people could cut into your conversation on the phone and get personal information. Something else I already knew was that apps can collects a lot of information about you just by saying you'll get extra coins for example. Something in this article that surprised me was that if your car has a GPS, it will always have where you went. Something else that surprised me was that if you returned your jeans, you would have to give them your drivers licence, phone number and address.

Cyber bullying

Some of the roles people play in cyber bullying is target, offender, bystander and up-stander. A target is the person that is getting bullied while the offender is the person that is harassing another person. A bystander is a person that seen the bulling go on and didn't do anything and a up-stander is someone that seen the bullying and helped stop it. A way cyber bullying can escalate is if someone posts something bad and then other people join in on the bullying by liking it or adding comments to the post. It is important to be a up-stander either than a bystander because someone can be really hurt by bullying and if only one person stands up to the bully it could change everything. Some ways you can be an up-stander is stand up to the bullies because the one getting bullied is to scared to stand up . Another way to be an up-stander is to be there for the victim when they need it the most because it's going to be hard on the person and they need someone to talk to.
